Maui Jim sunglasses were born on the beaches of Hawaii; designed to respond to the bright sun and harsh glare of the islands, all while enhancing the view. After 30 years, we're still independently owned, and the free-thinking Hawaiian spirit that first inspired us is still a part of everything we do. Our home office is located in Lahaina, Maui, and we still design and test all of our sunglasses there. Our sunglasses won't change the world-they'll change the way you see it.

What is Rayban?

Rayban is an American owned eyewear company that has been made famous for their iconic Aviator and Wayfarer Sunglasses. Established in 1929 by US Army Air Corps Colonel John A. Macready in collaboration with Bauch & Lomb a New York medical equipment manufacturer. Together they tackled an issue that has been plaguing aviation pilots from the beginning, the lack of clarity and vision at high altitudes. In 1936 RayBan created a solution to this issue with their lens prototype called “Anti Glare” which was a plastic frame with green lenses that helped cut out the glare without reducing visibility. They improved on their frame design by creating the classic sunglass frame we all know and love today, the “Aviators” which also go by the model number of RB3025.

How did they become so big?

Rayban became a household name in the sunglass industry with their flagship model RB3025 also known as “Aviators”. In the 1950’s The Aviators were worn by many famous public figures such as; Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson. During the 1950’s mimicking military style was part of the culture of that time making RayBan Aviators the hottest designer sunglasses in the world.

Being the creators of the aviator sunglasses, Rayban has cemented themselves as one of the most iconic and influential sunglass manufacturers in the world with 1 out of every 5 sunglasses sold in the world being a RayBan sunglass. In 1999 Bauch & Lomb sold the Rayban Brand to the Italian Eyecare conglomerate to The Luxottica Group for $640 Million. Luxottica is the largest eyewear company in the world and has there hands in some of the most popular and iconic brands ever sought after, which include Armani, Burberry, Bulgari, Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel, Coach, Michael Kors, Mui Mui, Prada, Oakley, Oliver Peoples, Persol, RayBan, Tiffany & Co., Tory Burch, Versace and more.

Why are Ray Bans so expensive?

Name brands, including Ray-Ban, typically offer lenses with UV protection, and some take it a step further with polarized lenses, which can also increase the price. There's also manufacturing and shipping costs that are factored into the price.
